Obsidian is a black volcanic glass formed when lava cools quickly. It’s shiny surface is the result of tiny crystals that form during cooling. These crystals are often shaped like snowflakes or needles, which gives obsidian its name, which comes from the Latin obsidere, “to pierce through.”
